Lubuntu to the rescue again!
I recently posted on a different blog my experiences reviving an old HP compaq nx9020 laptop with lubuntu (I'm currently using that laptop to post this) - a lightweight ubuntu distro: read it here
Today I've needed to use the very same disk burnt for that exercise to drag files off a friends PC with an salvageable Vista installation (the details are boring). Using a linux live CD to access files on a hard drive is nothing new.
There's some useful information about this here, and you'll notice that a large proportion of what's posted deals with mounting the dive(s) you want to access.
Just a small point, but lubuntu mounted all drives in the offending machine automatically.
